How do I know what is happening in committees?

There are several ways to keep yourself informed about the issues, presentations, and investigations happening in legislative committees. Meetings are recorded and transcribed so there is a written record of the discussion, and you can listen to the audio or read the transcript. You can watch committee meetings live or find recordings of past meetings in the committee media archive and catch up on issues of interest to you.

Types of committees

Standing committees are the permanent committees of the House. Their mandates are specified in the Rules of the Legislative Assembly (PDF). Standing committees may examine and report on matters within their mandates by majority decision or as directed by the House.

Special committees are appointed by the House from time to time, for particular purposes. This is done by resolution of the House. The resolution provides a terms of reference for the committee that specifies such things as the matter(s) the committee is to examine and report on; the membership of the committee; and expectations regarding the content and delivery of the committee’s report. Special committees cease to exist once they deliver their final report or when otherwise specified in the terms of reference.
