250th Anniversary of Democracy in Prince Edward Island
The Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island is marking a historic milestone: 250 years of electoral politics! The first House of Assembly met on July 7, 1773, with 18 Assemblymen gathering to pass 13 laws over 5 days.
Far from being widely representative, even in a small colony of only 1,200 people - only Protestant males could vote or hold office in this small British colony - these 18 original members weren't professional politicians, but they helped develop Prince Edward Island's democracy into the strong institution it is today.
