Some records are excluded from the scope of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (the “FOIPP Act”) or the Health Information Act. Here are some links to access the following types of records:
- Birth, Death, and Marriage Certificates: Access to this information is governed by the Vital Statistics Act. Here are webpages of the Director of Vital Statistics for information about accessing BIRTH CERTIFICATE, DEATH CERTIFICATE, or MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE. These webpages include information about fees and online request forms.
- Adoption Records: Access to this information is governed by the Adoption Act. In 2020 there were some changes to Prince Edward Island's Adoption Act that gives adult adoptees (or their children, if the adoptee is deceased) access to identifying information contained on their original birth registration, including name at birth and the identity of their birth parent(s). For adoptions finalized before January 31, 2020, the adopted person or the birth parents can file a disclosure veto. Here is a LINK with some general information that includes a “Post-Adoption Services Application Form” (look in the right column).
