Order of PEI Medal of Merit
The Order's insignia, the Medal of Merit, was first announced in a Speech From the Throne on March 9, 1995, as an opportunity for Islanders to recognize individuals who enriched Island life through their exceptional personal contributions to Island society, culture, or economy.
A Medal of Merit design competition was launched, with ads placed in local newspapers, and from the 21 designs submitted the current insignia was chosen by a panel of three judges. The winning design was created by Russell L. Stewart of Charlottetown, and in 1996, the first Prince Edward Island Medal of Merit recipients were named.
The insignia incorporates the province's coat of arms against a background of gold and blue, with a green and rust ribbon echoing the rolling fields and tilled soil of the Island.
